Meet Lane VanIngen
Lane
VanIngen was hired by the DOT's Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration (FMCSA) under their “Outstanding Scholar” hiring
authority after graduation from Bob Jones University in Greenville,
SC. During his time with the DOT, he was responsible for a variety of
tasks and programs including the performance of onsite FMCSA carrier
compliance reviews. He conducted over 1,000 FMCSA audits during his
tenure with the FMCSA, and gained a thorough understanding of all
issues related to audits and their effect on DOT safety ratings. He
prepared hundreds of enforcement actions on behalf of the FMCSA, and
had active involvement in the preparation of FMCSA agency orders
related to monetary penalties, safety ratings, and operating authority
revocations. He was also an accident site investigator for the
department, and conducted numerous investigations for FMCSA to
investigate safety issues arising from truck crashes.
Lane was promoted to a senior
level special agent / safety investigator position with FMCSA in
August 1993, a position that gave him responsibility for all DOT
program management issues for the Birmingham, Alabama market. In 2001,
Lane was awarded the prestigious Administrator’s Award (50/2010
Commitment to Safety Award) for managing the territory with the
nation’s highest accident reduction rate for commercial motor vehicle
fatalities. After managing a territory including Mobile, AL from
2001 to late 2002, Lane left the FMCSA to start Transportation Safety
Services.
As president of Transportation Safety Services,
Lane performs complete program assessments and provides written
recommendations outlining suggested actions. He has served as the
subject matter expert for the transportation related “Ask the
Expert” questions presented for the internet based
www.safetyinfo.com for several
years. He also has experience with the FMCSA CAPE (Commercial
Accident Prevention and Evaluation) program guidelines, and has
helped carriers develop and implement a variety of safety related
programs. Lane has spoken and provided instruction regularly on
safety and regulatory issues to various transportation industry
groups ranging from truck drivers to defense attorneys. He
has worked extensively with the Alabama Department of
Transportation, the motor carrier unit of the Alabama State
Troopers, and the Alabama Public Service Commission performing
truck safety functions.
