Meet Lane VanIngen

Lane VanIngen was hired by the DOT's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) under their “Outstanding Scholar” hiring authority after graduation from Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. During his time with the DOT, he was responsible for a variety of tasks and programs including the performance of onsite FMCSA carrier compliance reviews. He conducted over 1,000 FMCSA audits during his tenure with the FMCSA, and gained a thorough understanding of all issues related to audits and their effect on DOT safety ratings. He prepared hundreds of enforcement actions on behalf of the FMCSA, and had active involvement in the preparation of FMCSA agency orders related to monetary penalties, safety ratings, and operating authority revocations. He was also an accident site investigator for the department, and conducted numerous investigations for FMCSA to investigate safety issues arising from truck crashes.

Lane was promoted to a senior level special agent / safety investigator position with FMCSA in August 1993, a position that gave him responsibility for all DOT program management issues for the Birmingham, Alabama market. In 2001, Lane was awarded the prestigious Administrator’s Award (50/2010 Commitment to Safety Award) for managing the territory with the nation’s highest accident reduction rate for commercial motor vehicle fatalities.  After managing a territory including Mobile, AL from 2001 to late 2002, Lane left the FMCSA to start Transportation Safety Services.

As president of Transportation Safety Services, Lane performs complete program assessments and provides written recommendations outlining suggested actions. He has served as the subject matter expert for the transportation related “Ask the Expert” questions presented for the internet based www.safetyinfo.com for several years.  He also has experience with the FMCSA CAPE (Commercial Accident Prevention and Evaluation) program guidelines, and has helped carriers develop and implement a variety of safety related programs. Lane has spoken and provided instruction regularly on safety and regulatory issues to various transportation industry groups ranging from truck drivers to defense attorneys.  He has worked extensively with the Alabama Department of Transportation, the motor carrier unit of the Alabama State Troopers, and the Alabama Public Service Commission performing truck safety functions.
